Highsmith really put some thought into this book. Every angle was covered and every outcome was thought of. It wasn't like other books when a character does something and it leaves the reader thinking, "well why didn't he just do this?" or "wouldn't there be a repercussion from that action?". Highsmith just quietly shooshes the readers thoughts and then proceeds to explain why or what has happened or could have happened if these events have or have not happened. It feels good to actually read a well thought of book. Tom Ripley is a crazy character. He's kinda confused about somethings and doesn't really like being himself but the possibility of becoming someone else empowers him. He also has a lot of issues, he could go from being happy one minute and then wanting to kill and kiss the person all at the same time. He has a great imagination and convinces himself that false things were true and thus has a great skill of lying. The book's story was good but it didn't really give me that feeling of climax and resolution that I was hoping for. All the real action took place in the first two thirds and the last third was just him waiting around and being tense. I'm glad I read it but probably will never pick it up again.
