"It is easy, when you are young, to believe that what you desire is no less than what you deserve, to assume that if you want something badly enough, it is your God-given right to have it." - Jon Krakauer, Into the Wild. I think this quote describes how I felt about Alex/Chris, the person who's story is told in this book. Interestingly, the author is describing himself with this quote in one (of the two) chapters he takes to describe his own desire to participate in solitary outdoor feats without support. The author clearly had insight and understanding into Alex's situation and wilderness desires both of which I had a hard time understanding even by the end of the book. I also had a hard time separating the writing of this book from the content. I think the writing was clear and engaging, but I don't the the topic warranted a book. Chris appears to be an arrogant young man who has lost his connection with reality. He spent a lot of his travels "into the wild" living as a homeless person and a hobo by choice. He wouldn't have made it as long as he did with out the material goods, food, travel, work (and money) provided by others. I didn't see his much described intelligence come through in his actions.
